Acinetobacter01.jpeg(700 × 525 pixels, file size: 42 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Under the low-power magnification of 20X of a digital Keyence scope, this photograph depicts the colonial growth displayed by an unknown specie of the Gram-negative bacterial genus, Acinetobacter, which was cultured on a xylose-lysine-deoxycholate (XLD) agar medium, for a 24 hour time period, at a temperature of 37°C. See the link below for additional Acinetobacter-related information.

Acinetobacter is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water. While there are many types or “species” of Acinetobacter, and all can cause human disease, Acinetobacter baumannii accounts for about 80% of reported infections.

Outbreaks of Acinetobacter infections typically occur in intensive care units and healthcare settings housing very ill patients. Acinetobacter infections rarely occur outside of healthcare settings.
